Kerry Washington On Family Life : ‘My Children Are My Teachers’

Kerry Washington has two kids under the age of five and we, the public, have no idea what they look like.

The super private actress has done an outstanding job of keeping her personal life just that personal, but in the latest issue of Marie Claire Kerry opens up about motherhood and her marriage with husband Nnamdi Asomugha.

“The last time I did theater, it completely transformed my life,” Washington, 41, said. “That’s where I met my husband.”

Washington and Asomugha quietly wed in 2013. They welcomed their first child, Isabelle, in 2014 and welcomed their son, Caleb, in 2016. Virtually no photos of their children can be found online.

“My children are my teachers,” she added. “There’s a writer that I love, Dr. Shefali Tsabary. She writes about conscious parenting, and her paradigm is that we think about it all wrong.”

“We get sent by God the kids we need so we can grow in order to be the parents they need us to be,” she said. “The children I got sent came in perfect, and I have to figure out how to grow and evolve so that I can support the truth of them. I’m in a constant state of learning and challenging myself to make room for their perfection and beauty.”Washington explains that parents often think its their job to mold children and teach them who to be, but she believes it’s the children who actually mold the parents.

Although she’s busy with her own production company and various projects, it appears she’s got time to be a hands-on mommy. And she’s loving every minute of it.

“I love being with my family,” Washington beamed. “My days off look like homework, reading and watching stuff. Just hanging out, doing things we love to do.”
