ELLE Canada Pays Tribute To Natural Black Hair

ELLE’s September issue, the highly anticipated annual bible of beauty and fashion, features black models in a tribute to black hair.

The “Natural Anthem” beauty shoot showcases six women of color rocking a collection of natural styles including afro puffs, sculpted baby hair and braids. The six models hail from Kenya, Burundi, and Canada. One of them was even discovered at a Beyonce concert in Toronto. In the article the models discuss what it was like being a part of the shoot, favorite hair care products, their day-to-day makeup routines, the relationships they have with their hair and their own treasured beauty icons.

The magazine’s beauty director, Vanessa Craft posted the following to her Instagram account:

“I’ve never been in a photo shoot where it’s all black people. Usually there is one black person and seven Caucasian women. We all come from different backgrounds and we can share stories together. And I kind of feel at peace because at other shoots, nobody would talk to each other,” Aliisa says.

“My sister is a hairdresser. I started with braids. My mom wouldn’t let me wear a weave because she said it would be too grown-up for me. Grade 5 graduation was the only time I could wear one; it was a clip-on ponytail. In Grade 8, I got to wear a long weave. I loved it! I would get it sewn in. But I would have to straighten it and comb it out, or brush it out. In high school, I started wearing all natural. [Wearing a weave] is too much time. You have to maintain it,” she added.

I mean everybody and their momma going natural and staying away from the ” creamy crack.” Which means more creative and trendy hairstyles have been introduced.

Just Married: Solange Knowles & Alan Ferguson Tie the Knot

The happy couple said “I do” at the Marigny Opera House in New Orleans. Around 2 p.m., the pair arrived via white-painted vintage bicycles, and it was all about the details: The bride’s basket held flowers!

“Beaming. Calm. They looked pretty calm, relaxed on their wedding day,” one onlooker tells PEOPLE. “Definitely happy.” 

As for their arrival attire, the bride rocked a cream pantsuit with a cape and plunging V-neck (accenting her look with a red lip), while the groom matched in a white suit sans tie.

Ahead of their nuptials, the newlyweds celebrated with anintimate pre-wedding bashFriday at NOLA’s Indywood Cinema, which Hayley Sampson, the theater’s co-owner, told PEOPLE, “was pretty adorable.”

Question 1: So when’s the first time you fell in love with FASHION?

I would have to say when I was in the 7th grade because that’s when I remember I started to always dress up for school.

Question 2 : Do you have a signature STYLE?

My signature was always the vintage look but now I constantly change my style that I don’t have a specific one anymore.

Question 3: Who is your favorite DESIGNER?

I actually don’t have a favorite designer. I wear anything that I find nice and can afford.

Question 4 : Who is your current STYLE crush? 

Rihanna always does it for me.

Question 5: How do you pick the ensembles you display? 

I usually throw a few options on my bed and see what colors/print look good together.

I LOVE the fact that’s shes in the movie industry and doing her thang with kinky hair! Thats a bold and risk-taking statement in a industry full of relaxed and flat ironed hair. Teyonah DEFINITELY makes me want to wear my fro big and PROUD. Every time I see her on the red carpet or in photoshoots she is GORGEOUS, natural and PROUD. Looking different and standing out in a room full of millions , Teyonah embodies what a natural superwoman is. She always gets it right , since day one she has never disappointed me with anything…. and her HAIR is EVERYTHING and always on point.
