Tyler Perry Awarded Ultimate Icon Award At The 2019 BET Awards

Tyler Perry has teamed up with BET to launch the network’s ‘BET+’ subscription streaming service coming this fall.

Not only will the platform feature a bunch of Tyler’s new projects, but it’ll also house Tyler’s entire catalog of projects in addition to other BET original series, shows, and movies.

BET awarded Tyler with this year’s Ultimate Icon Award at the 2019 BET Awards.

While accepting the Ultimate Icon honor at the BET Awards on Sunday, Perry delivered an empowering, heartfelt speech about the life experiences that have allowed him to have such a successful career.

The writer, director, and actor, recalled growing up listening to the jokes his mother and her friends would tell one another, and later, when his abusive father would beat his mother, he would recite the jokes back to her in an effort to make her laugh. He also recalled walking to school as a young boy and being the only one willing to help an old man cross the street. “That moment reminded me of my mother, bringing out of her pain with laughter, helping her cross,” he said. He has spent much of his career trying to help black men and women “cross,” all the while keeping the thought of his mother at the forefront of his efforts.

“When I built my studio, I built it in a neighborhood that is one of the poorest black neighborhoods in Atlanta so that young black kids could see that a black man did that, and they can do it too. I was trying to help somebody cross,” Perry told the audience. “The studio was once a Confederate Army base, which meant that there was Confederate soldiers on that base, plotting and planning on how to keep 3.9 million Negroes enslaved. Now that land is owned by one Negro.”

Taraji P. Henson Speaks On Fighting Mental Health Issues: ‘It’s Okay Not to Be Okay’

Taraji P. Henson started the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, named after her late father, surrounding mental health care in the African-American community.

The actress visited Capitol Hill to discuss her mission.

via People:

“The suicide rate has taken off,” the Empire star tells PEOPLE. “It amazes me that 5-year-olds are contemplating suicide. That’s a word you shouldn’t even understand at five years old.”

Henson adds, “We don’t talk about mental health, we don’t deal with it. For generations, we’ve been told it’s a weakness, to pray our problems away – and that’s just not gonna cut it.”

On Friday, the actress urged members of the Black Caucus to join her in talking about mental illness – and getting people the help they need. “I’m only one voice. I need help,” she tells PEOPLE, adding that she wants mental healthcare to be taught in schools.

“If we can teach children about sex education and physical education, why not mental?” she says. “That’s where we start attacking this issue: with the children.”

Henson argues that if mental healthcare becomes a part of the school curriculum, then parents will be forced to talk about mental health care with their kids. “You’ve got to help me with my homework,” she says.

Henson continues to speak out about her own struggles with anxiety and depression. “I feel like I’ve really found my purpose,” says the star, who named her organization to honor her father, a Vietnam veteran who suffered from both PTSD and manic depression. “It’s hard,” she says. “But he knew it and he was able to get the help that he needed.”

And Henson tries to focus on the positive memories of her dad. “Why focus on the negative? He’s not here. It wasn’t all bad with my dad. He had his moments. But when you’re dealing with mental illness, that’s what you’re gonna have. But most of the memories were good,” she says. “I miss him. He needs to see me now.”

Her father died in 2005, just two years after her son’s father, William Lamar Johnson, “was murdered, brutally, here in Washington, D.C.,” she recalls. “It was time for us to get help.”

Following that difficult time in her life, Henson says, finding a therapist she could trust was hard. “It was like looking for a purple unicorn with a 24-carat-gold-horn. I say that jokingly, but it’s serious,” she shares. “The reason why we don’t have many psychiatrists of color, or psychologists of color, or therapists of color, is because we don’t talk about it at home.”

Now, she talks to her therapist twice a week. In person, if she’s in town and if not, she chooses to Skype or Facetime.

“I can call her at any time I’m having a moment and she’s there,” Henson says. “I was blessed enough to find someone I really gel with. She gets me.”

The mother of one and her fiancé Kelvin Hayden sometimes meet with her therapist together. “I want people to know it’s okay,” she says. “I don’t know what human is not suffering from some sort of anxiety or depression.”

But Henson adds that she’s still grieving her father. “It’s not something you just get over. You learn to deal with it,” says the actress, who still worries about her son.

“As a parent, I’m constantly scared,” she says. “I live in constant fear of my son getting pulled over by the cops. That is very real for every black parent. That’s anxiety.”

By Friday evening, Henson’s voice was already hoarse as she gave interviews to reporters at the Newseum, and posed for pictures with partygoers while hosting a benefit dinner to kick off a weekend conference discussing mental health issues in the African American community, called, “Can We Talk?”

Right On Taraji for doing the work.

Meek Mill Threatened With Arrest at Cosmo Hotel In Vegas, Claims Its Racism

SANTA MONICA, CA – JUNE 25: Meek Mill attends the 2018 NBA Awards Show at Barker Hangar on June 25, 2018 in Santa Monica, California. (Photo by Allen Berezovsky/Getty Images)

Meek Mill was forced to leave the Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas by threat of arrest — and he says the whole situation was racist.

via TMZ:

The Philly rapper and 2 members of his security rolled up to the Cosmo at around 3:30 PM PT Saturday when they were stopped by security. You see in this video … security was not about to let Meek inside the hotel.

Our sources say Meek asked the guard why he couldn’t come in, saying he didn’t do anything untoward in the past — he had only been there once before, with Nicki Minaj for a Jay-Z event 5 years ago.

Security made it clear … if Meek got out of the car, he’d be arrested. Meek, who was there to see a  DJ Mustard show, continued to ask why he was being denied, but the guard said, “I don’t know why.”

Meek’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, tells TMZ, the head of security made it clear — the decision to ban Meek came from above … the security chief said, “This comes from way higher up than me.”

Tacopina says he spoke with someone whom he says is “a well-placed person inside the hotel” … whom Tacopina says told him a group of hotels have tried to keep rappers out of the hotels. Tacopina claims it’s racially motivated, saying, “They wouldn’t ban Vanilla Ice.”

Meek himself addressed the altercation on social media, writing in part … “Cosmopolitan hotel/casino going to extreme racist levels to keep too many black entertainers and black people …. they said they gone lock me up.”

He added, “Some of these casinos have a bunch of Tatics to keep the level of blacks down …. but love to take our money!!!! This happens to a lot of black entertainers not just me either!!”

According to an update, a demand letter was written by Meek’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, to the Cosmopolitan.

In the letter, Joe writes,

“… we have learned that the Cosmopolitan maintains a list of African American recording artists who should be denied access for no other reason than than their culture and skin color.  Such course of conduct constitutes discrimination per se, in violation of state and federal law, and exposes you to significant monetary damages. “…we urge you to promptly issue an apology to Mr. Williams and grant him immediate access.  In the event you fail to heed this one and only warning, we intend to puruse all legal recourse against you.”

Im not surprised one bit. Ive heard this for years living here in Vegas
