Common Reveals He Was Molested As A Child In New Tell All Book

Common has opened about his childhood that sadly included being molested by a family friend when he was a child.

via Page Six:

Two years ago, the rapper was workshopping a scene for his role in “The Tale” with actress Laura Dern when he suddenly remembered the hair-raising moment from his past, he revealed in his new memoir “Let Love Have the Last Word.”

“One day, while talking through the script with Laura, old memories surprisingly flashed in my mind,” he wrote, according to People. “I caught my breath and just kept looping the memories over and over, like rewinding an old VHS tape…I said ‘Laura, I think I was abused.’”

The Grammy-winner said the incident happened when he was about 9 or 10 years old when he was growing up in Chicago.

“I was excited for a road trip I was about to take with my family. My mother; my godmother, Barbara; her son and my godbrother Skeet; and his relative, who I’ll call Brandon.”

When he arrived at his Aunt’s home in Cleveland, Common recalled how he and Brandon had to share a bed one night on the trip.

“At some point I felt Brandon’s hand on me,” he wrote. “I pushed him away. I don’t remember saying a whole lot besides ‘No, no, no.’”

The artist wrote that no matter how much he protested, the alleged abuser would not let up.

“He kept saying ‘It’s okay, It’s okay,’ as he pulled down my shorts and molested me. After he stopped he kept asking me to perform it on him. I kept repeating ‘No’ and pushing him away,” he wrote. “I felt a deep and sudden shame for what happened.”

Common, 47, believes he “buried” the memory of the assault, but is now seeking professional help to cope.

“I just pushed the whole thing out of my head,” he revealed. “Maybe it’s a matter of survival–Even now, two years after that flash resurgence of memories, as I’m writing, I’m still working through all of this in myself and with my therapist.”

While the star has never confronted Brandon about his devastating actions, and has not seen the alleged abuser in more than 25 years, Common says he has learned to forgive.

“I want to be a person who helps break cycles of violence,” he wrote. “This is love in action and I intend to practice it.”

Wish him nothing but healing and mental peace.

EXCLUSIVE : ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ actress Imani Hakim will star in Netflix’s ‘Burning Sands’

Netflix ‘Burning Sands’ leading lady is about to light it up in their new fraternity drama

Actress Imani Hakim will star in the Netflix original film ‘Burning Sands”, directed by Gerard McMurray

The film is centered around a particularly brutal hazing process at an all-black university

Favored frat pledgee (Trevor Jackson) is torn between honoring his code of silence or standing up against the intensifying violence of underground hazing.

The Everybody Hates Chris star, 23, will play Rochon, the love interest to Jackson’s character.

Check out my exclusive interview with Imani Hakim below

I’m so excited to watch Netflix’s Burning Sands. How did you become a part of this film?
Imani Hakim : I started the process of “Burning Sands” in November 2015 when I first auditioned. Then I was later called back to meet with Writer/Director Gerard McMurray and Casting Director Kim Coleman. McMurray told me, “I knew you were my Rochon as soon as I saw your audition tape. I know you can pull it off.” And that I did once filming started in May 2016.

What can we expect from your character Rochon in Burning Sands?
Iman Hakim : I play Rochon, the girlfriend of Zurich [played by Trevor Jackson]. Rochon is a strong and independent young queen who knows where she’s going in life. She’s also a fashion major at the University they attend.

The Gabby Douglas Story

What has been your favorite role so far?
Iman Hakim: That’s tough! I really enjoyed all the roles I’ve played so far. The Gabby Douglas Story was my favorite role. I enjoyed portraying Gabby and telling her life story as a Olympic Gold Medalist.

What role would you love to play that you haven’t yet?
Iman Hakim : I would love to do a dive into action. A bad ass super hero.

What is something embarrassing or unexpected that happened to you on set?
Iman Hakim : I haven’t experienced too many embarrassing moments on set. The one thing I can think of during the Everybody Hates Chris days, Tyler, Tequan and myself were running around being kids, trying to kill time when we were not filming. I was chasing down Tyler and I accidentally stepped on the back of his foot, which caused me to sprain my ankle. I couldn’t walk on it and we had a scene to film. So, Terry Crews had to carry me onto the set. Also, I ended up needed crutches, #Drama…. It did hurt pretty bad.

Tell us about your future projects?
Iman Hakim : I have more projects that have release dates, but fans can keep up with me on social media. There is where I post future project dates.

Hakim joins castmates Jackson, Alfre Woodard (“Luke Cage”), Steve Harris (“Legends”), Tosin Cole (“Hollyoaks”), DeRon Horton, Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Christian Robinson, Rotimi (“Power”), Octavius Johnson, Malik Bazille, Mitchell Edwards, Serayah (“Empire”), and Nafessa Williams (Brotherly Love).

Academy Award winning artist and actor Common will take the role of Executive Producer through his Freedom Road Productions. He will also bring his musical prowess to the project, performing the closing credits original song “The Cross” featuring Lianne La Havas.

Burning Sands will make its premiere on Netflix on March 10, 2017.

And the WINNER IS…..JHENE! She effortlessly killed it!

This is where the shady industry goes to far? Why on Gods green earth was Beyonce asked to sing the Mahalia Jackson cover instead of Ledisi? Ledisi bodied the cover on the Selma soundtrack. Beyonce is cool but Ledisi voice is from another galaxy. The Grammys is clearly a popularity contest in a much all ready shady industry. If your looking for real talent trust me its not a on the radio or tv every 5 mintues. The Grammys will never recognize a QUEEN like Ledisi. Shes to real for em….No Shade just all facts!
