Mathew Knowles Says Beyonce’s Career Benefited From Her Lighter Complexion and Kelly Rowland’s Suffered

Mathew Knowles kept it all the way real about colorism in the music industry and how it affected both Beyoncé and groupmate Kelly Rowland.

via Variety:

In the interview with “The Clay Cane Show” on SiriusXM Urban View, Knowles said he taught a college class that did its own research study on “colorism” in music spanning a period of 15 years and found that, “overwhelmingly,” light-skinned black women fared better than darker-toned divas, especially at Top 40 radio. Among the beneficiaries of the perceived bias cited by Knowles or Cane were Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce.

“In the music industry there’s still segregation,” said Knowles. “Programmers, especially at pop radio, have this imagery of what beauty looks like. … If you look back even at Whitney Houston, if you look at those photos, how they lightened her to make her look lighter-complexioned … Because there’s a perception and a colorism: the lighter that you are, the smarter and more economically (advantaged)… There’s a perception all around the world about color — even with black folks, there’s a perception.”

Asked by Cane if that prejudice toward lighter tones had any impact on Beyonce’s career, Knowles said, “I think she would have had — I think it would’ve affected her success. And I use Kelly Rowland as an example. She’s a great example. But you know, the great thing is, Kelly did exceptional outside of America, especially in Australia. Kelly sold over 4 million records. She just got off-script.”

Rowland has addressed the issue in the past. In 2013, in an interview with Cnikky.com, she acknowledge a period of insecurity about her look — even as it was coveted by many of her fans and admirers — and said, “You know what, I had great women in my life to help me overcome that. I remember I went through a period where I didn’t embrace my ‘chocolatiness.’” Rowland attributed her change of attitude in part to a conversation with Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles.

Michelle Williams Reveals How Her Battle with Depression Almost Ended Her Relationship With Chad Johnson Twice

Michelle Williams’ battle with depression often affects her relationship with Chad Johnson, causing the couple to break up twice in a span of several months.

The Destiny’s Child singer first ended her engagement weeks after Johnson popped the question in March, then again just before she checked herself into a mental health facility in July, according to People.

“I thought I was over depression, I thought, ‘I’m good!’ I’ve got love, I’m working out,” the 38-year-old star told the publication. “But I was so angry. The rage built up in me. I did not attempt suicide, but I was questioning [life].”

Having recognized the signs of depression from earlier in her career, she began noticing a change around the time of Coachella in April.

“The entire year we were rehearsing every day for hours,” the Gospel singer added. “I was burying it, and before you knew it, I was looking up out of the pit like, ‘Oh my God.’”

During the rocky months, Williams apparently tried to cut Johnson out of the picture, but he stayed on board supporting her the entire way.

“I would’ve understood [if he left],” Williams explained. “He’s been praying for a wife. He didn’t pray for a depressed wife.”

Today, their relationship is moving forward and they are undergoing premarital counseling while she continues her own private counseling.

“People fall off the fitness wagon, people fall off the wellness wagon, but I can’t fall off the [therapy] wagon,” the star reiterated. “I have to get healed to live this happy life.”

Beyoncé Announces Scholarships for Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Just days after her epic Coachella performance, Beyoncé announced the four new schools benefiting from the second installment of the BeyGOOD Initiative’s Homecoming Scholars Award program (previously the Formation Scholars Award program).

One student from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Xavier University, Wilberforce University, Tuskegee University and Bethune-Cookman University, will receive $25,000 for the 2018-2019 academic year.

via Rolling Stone:

Ivy McGregor, Director of Philanthropy and Corporate Relations at Parkwood Entertainment, which houses BeyGOOD, said the program salutes “the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” She added, “We honor all institutions of higher learning for maintaining culture and creating environments for optimal learning which expands dreams and the seas of possibilities for students.”

Beyoncé established the scholarship in April 2017 to mark the one-year anniversary of her 2016 visual LP, Lemonade. While the first year spotlighted young women, the 2018-2019 year will expand to all qualifying students at the four universities, regardless of gender.

The associated disciplines will include literature, creative arts, African American studies, science, education, business, communications, social sciences, computer science and engineering. Applicants must maintain a 3.5 or better GPA. The four universities will select all finalists and winners, with recipients announced this summer.

Beyoncé honored the history of HBCUs during her headlining Coachella set on Saturday, incorporating over 150 musicians and dancers – including a marching band and choir – into her detailed set, which also included guest spots from Jay Z, Solange and her former Destiny’s Child members.
