Versace Sues Fashion Nova Over Jennifer Lopez Famous Dress Rip-Off

Fashion Nova done messed with the wrong designer this time.

The fashion brand tried their hand at knocking off the iconic Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards — and Versace is suing.

Versace has filed a suit with Fashion Nova for ripping off J.Lo’s Grammy gown, as well as a few other designs. The Italian design house labels Fashion Nova as a fast-fashion movement—a.k.a. scammers. In court documents, Versace calls Fashion Nova a “serial infringer specializing in ‘fast-fashion’ knock-offs.” Versace also points to the famous people who have worn their designs, including Princess Diana, Princess Caroline, Elton John, Lady Gaga and Liz Hurley.

The suit also says that Fashion Nova has been sued at least eight times for this type of alleged wrongdoing, including a suit from Adidas.

Versace says it originally warned the fast-fashion company in July 2019, but when nothing happened Versace decided to take the matter to court. The design house is suing Fashion Nova for profits off Versace replicas, and to get an injunction blocking further sales and damages.

In December 2018, the Los Angeles fashion company Riot Society alleged that Fashion Nova stole a Panda bear and rose design, which the company claimed they copyrighted, according to The Blast. Riot Society sent a cease and desist letter to Fashion Nova in June 2018 but never heard back. They sued $150,000 for infringement and demanded all profits that were made off the design

Thirty-five customers have reviewed the aptly named “Royal Debut Gown” on Fashion Nova’s site since July, with some saying they even wore it to their own weddings.

“Very flattering. Stretchy thick fabric so it’s not see thru. Beautiful little train on the back. Wore as my second dress at my wedding and everyone screamed as I walked back in the room!” one satisfied customer wrote. Another said their bridesmaids wore it down the aisle.

For those looking for a more high-end option, Stella McCartney is also selling versions of the now-infamous design. However, the British designer is producing just 46 replicas of Markle’s gown (23 in white, 23 in black). Those seeking to purchase will have to get an exclusive invite from McCartney herself — and each will cost £3,500, or about $4,656.

At that price, the Fashion Nova version is looking better than ever.

Cardi B Talks Fashion + Why She Chose Fashion Nova to Partner With For A Collection

Cardi B is getting ready to launch her highly-anticipated collection for Fashion Nova and she recently spoke to Business of Fashion on why she chose to partner with fashion brand.

via BoF:

“They are always loyal to me. It’s like a friendship now,” she said of the bodycon clothing line that churns out 1,000 new items a week. “I’m also really proud of them. Their brand has sold so much, and I have sold so much at the same time and it’s like, ‘Yay, we did it!’ We both did it at the same time.”

Her collection, which goes on sale November 15, comes at a time when Fashion Nova’s popularity may just rival the rapper’s. According to a Piper Jaffray survey last week, Fashion Nova was the sixth most popular e-commerce site among upper-income teens, beating out brands including Forever 21, Lululemon and Adidas.

Since launching as an e-commerce site in 2013, Fashion Nova has managed to harness a lightning-in-a-bottle type of hype, fueled primarily by a network of prolific micro influencers who post photos of themselves wearing the curve-hugging clothing on Instagram. That, coupled with the constant flow of new product that Richard Saghian, chief executive of Fashion Nova calls “ultra fast fashion,” has catapulted the company into the top tier of online retail.

But the exposure and success has drawn competitors, who are taking a page out of the Fashion Nova playbook, as well as complaints from customers about fit and quality. As the marketplace becomes more saturated, the brand is looking to prove it can do more than churn out an endless series of disposable — and easily imitated — dresses, pants and tops.

Enter Cardi B. True to form, the rapper is as candid about her relationship with the brand (she has previously stated that she receives $20,000 a month to wear the label and promote it on social media) as she is her plastic surgery and personal life. But though she was among Fashion Nova’s earliest fans, recently, she’s worn Moschino, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander Wang for events ranging from the Grammys to the Met Ball and New York Fashion Week. She’s following fellow female R&B stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé who have had success with their break into fashion, expanding their brand and sartorial influence into their own lingerie and streetwear lines, respectively.

No doubt the impressive lineup of designers clamoring to dress Cardi B has only bolstered the Fashion Nova brand, which she continues to wear with the same frequency she does high-end items. Cardi B’s collection, the first celebrity collaboration for Fashion Nova, comes at a time when there is a seemingly perfect storm of her popularity and a growing appetite for authenticity and inclusivity among consumers.

The line will consist of 80 looks ranging from junior to curve, with an average price point of $40, including suiting, blouses, dresses, outerwear, denim, knitwear and accessories. In designing the collection, Cardi B said her goal was to create clothing that would blur the lines between expensive and inexpensive, with a focus on quality fabric and fit.

Every little detail to me matters,” Cardi B said. “I want to make these women look so happy — so radiant, sexy, so corporate and poppin’. I want them to look like they’re wearing Gucci and Prada, but they’re not, they’re wearing my line.”

The pre-launch promotion stays true to Fashion Nova’s roots — relying on influencers to spread the word — but on a vastly amplified stage. Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, has been teasing her forthcoming collaboration with Fashion Nova on social media for several months in the same manner that she evangelizes the brand on Instagram, whether she’s wearing it head-to-toe or paired with Christian Louboutin boots and a Balenciaga bag.

Fashion Nova will have a launch event in Los Angeles starting November 14 at 8pm, featuring musical performances and drumming up even more excitement for the collection launch which happens at midnight. The event will be livestreamed for fans anywhere to watch, but the brand also has plans for a “Party with Cardi” online sweeps in which 10 customers will be flown out for the event. Shoppers will be able to purchase in real time when the collection goes live at midnight, November 15.

“Because Cardi styles our product with high end luxury brands such as Gucci and Givenchy, we will be able to slowly dissolve the perceived separation between ‘high-end’ and ‘cheap’ clothes and make trendy fashion accessible to everyone,” said Saghian in an email. “This will really resonate to a wide consumer base who essentially want it all; it doesn’t have to be one way or the other anymore.”

Fashion Nova Has A Beauty Line About To Be Released

Fashion Nova, the very popular fashion brand thats became a force to be reckoned with, has plans to expand into the beauty industry.

Known for using the power of social media and using Insta-models to sell bodycon dresses and now men’s hoodies the Califronia- based brand is ready to take over the beauty world.

In a recent Business of Fashionarticle, that profiled the companies meteoric rise, CEO Richard Saghain revealed that they are working on a beauty brand, Nova Beauty. Set to make its debut later this year or early next, Saghain said he had plans to turn Fashion Nova into a full fledged lifestyle brand.

Im not sure what beauty products the brand will launch first. If I had to take a guess, it would probably be eyeshadow palettes, lip products, lashes and highlighters. As we’ve seen over the last few years, beauty has become an extremely hot category with many new players entering the industry.

Keep a close eye out for the #NovaBeauty hashtag for updates on the launch date and the products we can expect on social media

Will you be shopping the line once it drops?

This Fashion Brand Was Googled More Than The World’s Top Designers In 2017

Im sure you can’t scroll through Instagram without seeing dozens of your favorite celebrities and fashionista wearing an outfit from Fashion Nova, or seeing an ad from the very affordable fashion brand. And apparently their constant presence on your Instagram feed has translated into mega-success for the women’s clothing line!

Google recently released its Year In Search 2017 data and highlighted the top ten most Google-searched brands in 2017. While Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Supreme topped the list, Fashion Nova was the fourth most searched fashion brand in the United States. And quite frankly, they were the only affordable label that made the list and beat out other luxury designers like Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior and Dolce & Gabbana.

So how did this dope, low-priced fashion brand like Fashion Nova make the list? It’s most likely due to the star power of some of its biggest fans. Celebrities like Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Toya Wright have all promoted the brand on their own Instagram feeds. Majority of everything on the site priced at under $100, who wouldn’t be tempted to shop.
