Black Panther’s Ruth E. Carter Win Oscar for Best Costume Design

Ruth E. Carter took home the Academy Award for ‘Best Costume Design’ for her astonishing work on Marvel’s ‘Black Panther.’

She’s the first Black woman EVER to win in that category. It is also the first Oscar EVER for Marvel Studios.

via EW:

Carter — a previous Oscar nominee for Amistad and Malcom X — helped clothe the entire fictional nation of Wakanda in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, crafting everything from Chadwick Boseman’s superhero suit to the Dora Milaje’s colorful armor. The award is also the first Oscar won by Marvel Studios.

“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king,” Carter said in her acceptance speech. “It’s been my life’s honor to create costumes. Thank you to the Academy, and thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen.”

Carter also thanked Spike Lee — himself a nominee this year for BlacKkKlansman— for giving her her “start” with Malcolm X. “I hope this makes you proud,” she added.

Carter previously opened up to EW about the overwhelming response to Black Panther, which scored seven Oscar nominations and has earned more than $1.3 billion at the global box office.

“It’s such an important film,” Carter she told EW. “It made such a mark and I love the costumes myself. For the fans, I’m just so proud that it got recognized by the Academy as well. Sometimes, the fans will love something and the Academy won’t recognize it, so you think, was it big enough or was it great enough? But, it feels like a home run.”

Carter beat out fellow nominees Mary Zophres for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Sandy Powell for The Favourite and Mary Poppins Returns, and Alexandra Byrne for Mary Queen of Scots.

Yayyyy👑 Congrats Ruth!

They Tried It! Gucci Apologizes for Racist Blackface Sweater

Its only six days into Black History Month and it’s seems as they they couldnt wait for the disrepect.

Gucci has joined the racist bandwagon for a blackface-inspired sweater.

The fashion house has apologized for selling the black balaclava knit top from the Fall Winter 2018 season. It currently sells for $890 on sites like Spring and features a cut-out at the mouth that is outlined in hred.

Here’s how the sweater is described on the website:

‘Inspired by vintage ski masks, multicolored knitted balaclavas walked the runway, adding a mysterious feel to this collection. This knit top combines the accessory with the ready-to-wear collection.’

Anyone with eyes can see that the sweater is reminiscent of racist caricatures with overtly drawn red lips.

Gucci’s apology below:

Gucci deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper.
We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make.

Fashion Nova Sells A Knockoff Of Meghan Markle’s Wedding Reception Dress

You can almost guaranteed to find whatever clothing you need for a affordable price at Fashion Nova.

Via Page Six

Thirty-five customers have reviewed the aptly named “Royal Debut Gown” on Fashion Nova’s site since July, with some saying they even wore it to their own weddings.

“Very flattering. Stretchy thick fabric so it’s not see thru. Beautiful little train on the back. Wore as my second dress at my wedding and everyone screamed as I walked back in the room!” one satisfied customer wrote. Another said their bridesmaids wore it down the aisle.

For those looking for a more high-end option, Stella McCartney is also selling versions of the now-infamous design. However, the British designer is producing just 46 replicas of Markle’s gown (23 in white, 23 in black). Those seeking to purchase will have to get an exclusive invite from McCartney herself — and each will cost £3,500, or about $4,656.

At that price, the Fashion Nova version is looking better than ever.
