RIHANNA AS MARIE ANTOINETTE ON THE COVER OF CR FASHION BOOK

A bad gal becomes a queen.

In order to understand why Rihanna is the perfect cover star for our Fall/Winter issue, our ninth edition, you must understand the issue’s theme. CR 9 is entirely dedicated to one of history’s most controversial and misunderstood heroines: Marie Antoinette. In fact, her most famous quote, “let them eat cake,” was never actually uttered by the Queen and has, over time, been attributed to her by mistake. It was this lack of understanding, as much as her notoriously over-the-top personal style, that moved Carine.

“I wanted to show that she is not just a villain to be despised or a muse to be channeled,” says Carine. “She is neither, actually. She is a prototype for contemporary fame, body, beauty, celebrity, and femininity. Everything done by her and to her has influenced society’s concept of womanhood, for better or worse.” Looking at the life and times of Marie Antoinette, we begin to see parallels between her and the female celebrities of today. Who besides our modern pop stars are followed with more obsession and desire? Rihanna is beloved while Marie Antoinette was not, but she shares with the Queen an unapologetic attitude that inspires and fascinates. She says what she wants, smokes what she wants, and wears what she wants, making her an icon of authenticity in an era of calculated, pre-baked fame.

For our cover, Carine and Terry Richardson reimagined Rihanna as a modern-day Marie Antoinette. And there couldn’t be anyone more fit for this role of the disparaged yet deeply compelling Queen. “In this issue, I wanted to capture that sense of attraction and repulsion: the fantasy of glamour but also the poison and prison of femininity and society,” Carine explains. “The magazine is crafted around key elements of her [Marie Antoinette’s] life—her exuberant sense of fashion, her elaborate hairdos, her intense sexuality—almost like a modern biography through fashion imagery. And on the cover is Rihanna, who shares with Marie Antoinette an air of royalty that I, and the world it seems, find intoxicating.”

Women’s fashion has ventured off into men’s wear. It is important to incorporate the ying and the yang factor when attempting this look. A meticulous merger of men’s tailoring and a woman’s sex appeal is the best way to create a stylish synergy. A simple suggestion: Men’s fit trousers and blazer feminized by a silk button-front blouse. This is a transitional look is made day time chic  when coupled with a pair of oxfords while also working well for a night on the town when heightened by 5″ heels. The day version of this look works well with long, lean figures. Less lengthy women should opt for the latter. Heels will give more petite women a more masculine height. Also, try a slim fit pant with a mens shirt. This works well for all body types. Literal accents can add style but choose wisely. There is a fine line between couture and costume!

Let Freedom Reign

“We were carried here in shackles from the homeland
Broom-chopped, chain-locked, brainwashed, programmed
Time’s changed, freedom reigns, I’m a grown man
Holding the future in the palms of my own hands
In this world the coonery and tomfoolery
All I’m trying to do is stay true to my community
The daily news ain’t the only thing that’s schooling me
Watching these haters operating with impunity
It’s dirty dollar signs
Black and white collar crimes
Running out of time
Out of sight, out of mind
It gets realer in Israel, in Palestine
Troubles of the world start to seem intertwined
War criminals, conflict minerals
Pillagers are coming home
Five-star generals
Telling lies in press conferences and interviews
I’m trying to take back the power
Cause it’s been abused.” Black Thought

Black girls are punished and mocked for their originality while others co-opt it. ‪#‎VogueArticles‬

The very people who exclude black girls from beauty standards profit from and co-opt black women’s creations. #VogueArticle

For the same reasons Vogue says Jennifer Lopez ushered in the “booty” era. When something is inherent to our culture, it is marginalized and seen as undesirable. When the dominant culture does it, they are given benefit of doubt. We saw this with Miley Cyrus and twerking, JLO and booty, Angelina Jolie and thick lips.

What’s going on Family.. lets talk. These double standards HAVE TO STOP?
