Ryan Coogler Officially Signs On To Do A ‘Black Panther’ Sequel

Wakanda Forever

Ryan has signed on to write and direct the ‘Black Panther’ sequel

While the move was expected — Marvel wanted to keep the creative team as intact as possible and a sequel was never in any real doubt — the timing was always unclear.

Black Panther, centering on T’Challa, the king of a fictional African country, was an outsized success both commercially and critically. The pic, which starred Chadwick Boseman as the titular hero, grossed $700 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide, and is also considered a contender for Oscar consideration. The movie became a defining cultural moment and touchstone, especially for the black community.

In the weeks prior and after the film’s February release, both Marvel and Coogler’s camp were hounded about when a sequel deal would be inked. Typically, a filmmaker is more than willing to quickly sign on for a follow-up, and a studio is eager to snap up a key piece of talent in the lead-up to or right after a successful opening. But Coogler’s camp shook off the peer pressure and took its time in making a deal, which occurred under the radar some time ago.

Sources say the plan at this stage is for Coogler to write the script next year with an eye to start production in either late 2019 or early 2020. Marvel and parent company Disney, however, have not made any official announcements about Marvel’s slate of movies beyond the release of the next Avengers pic in May 2019 and a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel in July — and plans could shift.

Coogler is developing the drama Wrong Answer with his frequent collaborator and Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan. He also is executive producing LeBron James’ Space Jam sequel and acts in the same capacity on the upcoming Creed 2.

It Goes Down In The DM : Michael B. Jordan Meets Up With a Fan Who Slid in His DMs

IT GOES DOWN IN THE DM

It takes a lot of gut to slide in anyone’s DMs these days, let alone the DMs of a celebrity.

21-year-old Sylvia Wilson, a student at Temple University, decided to shoot her shot by hitting up Michael B Jordan once she found out he was on her college campus filming Creed II — and it paid off!

Wilson posted photos with the actor on Twitter on May 1, writing to her social media followers, “so I slid in his DM’s, and then this happened.” The tweet has since gone viral and Wilson is telling E! News all about their meeting.

The college student tells us that after her athletic advisor informed her that Jordan was on campus, she decided to DM him to see if she could get him a smoothie in exchange for a picture.

After sending the message, Jordan didn’t respond right away, but then “my notifications went off and that’s when I saw the DM,” Wilson tells us

“I was like, ‘Oh my goodness!’ And just started freaking out,” Wilson shares. “He was really nice about everything! He was like, ‘Hey you don’t have to get me a smoothie just come and take pictures.’ But my friends were going to take pictures as well and he was like, ‘You guys can all come together as a group.’”

Wilson continues, “Then we worked out details to come. He made sure that security would let him know that we were there. He was really nice about it all, we went in and he gave us all hugs and he took pictures with each and every one of us. And then there was a group of people who saw us taking pictures with him and he didn’t really want a crowd so he quickly got out of there, and I’m not sure if he took pictures with the other people but we just left.”

What made her think to offer a smoothie to the actor?

It was really hot outside and because I was doing my physical therapy and I figured he was training, I was like it’s probably not right to ask him out for drinks or something like that,” Wilson explains. “I was like I’ll just see if he wanted a smoothie because I really wanted a smoothie. So I’m like, while I’m getting one for myself I may as well just see if he wants one.”
