While accepting the Ultimate Icon honor at the BET Awards on Sunday, Perry delivered an empowering, heartfelt speech about the life experiences that have allowed him to have such a successful career.

The writer, director, and actor, recalled growing up listening to the jokes his mother and her friends would tell one another, and later, when his abusive father would beat his mother, he would recite the jokes back to her in an effort to make her laugh. He also recalled walking to school as a young boy and being the only one willing to help an old man cross the street. “That moment reminded me of my mother, bringing out of her pain with laughter, helping her cross,” he said. He has spent much of his career trying to help black men and women “cross,” all the while keeping the thought of his mother at the forefront of his efforts.

“When I built my studio, I built it in a neighborhood that is one of the poorest black neighborhoods in Atlanta so that young black kids could see that a black man did that, and they can do it too. I was trying to help somebody cross,” Perry told the audience. “The studio was once a Confederate Army base, which meant that there was Confederate soldiers on that base, plotting and planning on how to keep 3.9 million Negroes enslaved. Now that land is owned by one Negro.”

Look At GOD : Geoffrey Owens Accepts Tyler Perry’s Job Offer, Will Appear on ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’

Wont He Do IT! 🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️

After making headlines for working his side gig at Trader Joes, ‘Cosby Show’ actor Geoffrey Owens has now accepted a job offer from Tyler Perry and will appear on 10-episodes of OWN’s ‘The Have and the Have Nots.’

via TMZ

Owens, who starred on “The Cosby Show,” was recently photographed working as a cashier at Trader Joe’s. Geoffrey was shamed by many for the cashier job and Tyler reached outvia Twitter, saying, “I’m about to start shooting OWN’s number one drama next week! Come join us!!!”

Sources familiar with the deal tell us joining Tyler is exactly what Geoffrey will do. We’re told he’s going to appear on Perry’s hit, “The Haves and the Have Nots.” Even bigger … it’s not a one shot deal.  We’re told he’ll have a recurring role and appear on 10 episodes.

The show — on it’s 6th season — shoots in Atlanta, and we’re told Owens will fly there next week to begin filming.

As for his salary … that’s unclear, but working one job is always better than two.

‘Cosby Show’ Actor Geoffrey Owens Speaks on Job Shaming ; Gets Offered a Job By Tyler Perry

‘The Cosby Show’ actor Geoffrey Owens is speaking out in the wake of being ‘job shamed’ for taking a side job at Trader Joe’s.

“I was really devastated,” Geoffrey said of the initial reporting. “But the period of devastation was so short because, so shortly after that, my wife and I started to read these responses of support from all over the world, so the shame period didn’t last very long.”

“I’d been teaching, acting, directing for 30-plus years, but it got to a point where it just didn’t add up enough. You gotta do what you gotta do,” he said.

Despite the newfound attention, Geoffrey says he doesn’t want the controversy to earn him new acting jobs.

“I wouldn’t feel comfortable with someone giving me a job because this happened,” he said, adding that he would be open to offers to audition. “I want to get a job because I’m the right person for that job.”

Tyler Perry has already offered Geoffrey a role, with others probably soon to come.

While he knows the conversation about him specifically will pass, Geoffrey hopes the larger conversation about the value of hard work will leave a lasting impact.

“There’s no job that’s better than another job,” he said. “Every job is worthwhile and valuable, and if we have a re-thinking about that because of what’s happened to me, that would be great.”

“I’ve had a great life. I’ve had a great career. I’ve had a career that most actors would die for,” he said. “No one has to feel sorry for me. I’m doing fine.”
